Description: STIFF CARDBOARD MENU FOR A 1911 DINNER. includes signatures of at least a few cabinet members of Asquith, who happened to be be sick on the evening of this dinner. They may not have been Cabinet members as of the date of the dinner but were during the 1908-1915 period. WHEN CLOSED, THE MENU IS 4.5" WIDE BY 7" TALL. The dinner occurred at the House of Commons on April 6, 1911. THE AUTOGRAPHS ARE IN BOTH INK AND IN PENCIL AND SOME OF THE PENCIL HAS RUBBED OFF. WHILE I WAS ABLE TO IDENTIFY MAYBE TEN OF THE NAMES, NOT HAVING A LIST OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS IN 1911 DIDN'T MAKE IT EASY. THE REVERSE SIDE OF THE MENU WAS ORIGINALLY GLUED INTO A SCRAP BOOK OWNED BY AMY PHIPPS, WIFE OF FREDERICK GUEST. - GUEST IS BEST KNOWN FOR BEING THE CHIEF WHIP OF PRIME MINISTER DAVID LLOYD GEORGE'S COALITION PARTY 1917-1921 AND FOR BEING FIRST COUSIN TO WINSTON CHURCHILL. CONDITION: THE MENU HAS SIGNIFICANT SURFACE WEAR AND THE ONE PAGE OF ITEMS BEING SERVED AT THE DINNER HAS QUITE A BIT OF LOSS OF THE SURFACE OF THE PRINTED AREA. The entire menu has age related paper toning. - The front cover has soiling and some surface loss.- The page of toasts has soiling- The "AUTOGRAPHS" page is intact with some soiling. I was able to identify approximately ten of the signatures. Several others appeared rather easy to read but my lack of access to a list of MP of the period means that if I even was one letter off in my guess, the name did not come up. I have close ups of all names. You can likely identify many more than I can IDENTIFIED:1- FREDERICK GUEST- (PHOTO 3 TOP)2- SIR JOHN FULLER (the guest of honour) (PHOTO 4)3- L.V HARCOURT- 1st Viscount and Chairmen (PHOTO 5) CABINET MEMBER4- SIR EDWARD WILLIAM WALLINGTON- Cricketeer (PHOTO 3- E.W Wallington)5- J.E.B SEELY (Signed J. Seely and "y" is identical to other sigs I have seen) 1st Baron Mottistone (PHOTO 6- top left) CABINET MEMBER6- JOHN ELLIOT BURNS (PHOTO 6- right) (CABINET MEMBER)7- SIR ARCHIBALD WILLIAMSON 1st Baron Forres PC (PHOTO 8- right)8- CHARLES MCLAREN- 1st Baron Aberconway (PHOTO 6, under Seely)9- LT. COL ARTHUR C. MURRAY- Midlothian (PHOTO 7- top)10- W. MITCHELL THOMSON- 1st Baron Selsdon (PHOTO 4 top)11- JOSEPH ALBERT PEASE- 1st Baron Gainford, Secretary to the Treasury (PHOTO 8- bottom) CABINET MEMBER NOT IDENTIFIED- even though some are quite close to being legible 12- C.P LUCAS (possibly Sir Charles Prestwood Lucas) (PHOTO 8)13- C.S ROSE (possibly C.V Rose) (PHOTO 3)14- HENRY W.... (possibly Henry Wilson 1st Baronet) (PHOTO 3)15- RUPERT ....... (PHOTO 4)16- ALFRED E........ (PHOTO 4)17- .Looks like Percy Allenworth (PHOTO 6)18- Appears to begin DEU... (PHOTO 5 right). A location that someone who considered himself important would sign. 19- Last name appears to be SOAMES (PHOTO 3 bottom)20- Maybe "Mayfair?" I doubt it (PHOTO 3- above Seely)21- I have no idea (PHOTO 3- to the right of J. SEELY)22- Looks like J Hubert Morris (PHOTO 8- above Joseph Pease)23- Name beneath Charles Mclaren (PHOTO 6)24- Light Pencil last name - too many possibilities (PHOTO 8- two names above Joseph Pease and partially covered by #22 above)25- This guy didn't even try, maybe "Ed.......... (PHOTO 6- left of John Burns)26- Appears to have the initials M.M and written in ink. (PHOTO 3 Second from bottom) Given that those I can identify include four cabinet members, I would guess there could be more. I found nothing looking like Winston Churchill, or HH. Asquith, or David Lloyd George. It doesn't help that some may have signed their rank instead of their name, because that is something I would never figure out. If you want to help me out with some I did not identify, feel free. Thanks
