Description: SCROLL DOWN FOR DESCRIPTION, PHOTOS AND TERMS DESCRIPTION: Vintage original photograph, shows boat on the Wisconsin River, in the Dells area. From a large collection of photographs of the Hansbrough or Hansborough family. We believe the collection belonged to John William Hansborough, who wrote a book in 1981 "History and genealogy of the Hansborough Hansbrough family with data on the Hanbury, Garrard, Lash, Devous, Davis, Wathen and Bell families". Many of the unidentified people in these photos could be from these families. John William Hansborough was born May 18, 1908, in Enfield, Illinois. His parents were John Aloysius Hansborough, who was born January 30, 1882 in Enfield, Illinois, died April 12, 1960 in Los Angeles, California, and Mary M. Devous. John and Mary were married on November 15, 1904 in Ridgeway, Illinois, and had six children, a baby boy who died shortly after birth in 1905, Jeanette Anna, born March 3, 1907, John William, born May 8, 1908, Raphael Devous, born November 10, 1910, Norman Joseph, born September 26, 1912, and Mary Catherine Dolores, born February 4, 1916. John A. Hansborough was a railroad telegrapher in his early life. The family moved a great deal, and about 1906 they moved to Texas where they spent most of their lives. For five years (1911-1916) they lived in Standart, Texas, where John A. was a railroad agent, telegrapher, postmaster, and operated a small general store. These were days of trouble with the Mexican bandit Pancho Villa who once raided all around the Hansborough place but did not bother them because John A. was friendly with the Mexicans and advanced them credit in his store. Mr. Hansborough purchased one of the first automobiles west of San Antonio, and on September 8, 1913, he was issued automobile register receipt No. 13 for Kinney County, Texas. He made his own license plate, and called his automobile "Pebbles". The car was not much use since there were no roads, and Mr. Hansborough sold his early Ford to Dr. Ross of Del Rio, Texas. The first road was built about 1914, connecting Standart with the military post of Fort Clark at Brackettville. Prior to this, travel was either cross country or along the railroad track to Del Rio, which was 18 miles away. In 1916 the Hansborough family moved from Standart to San Antonio where the children first attended a public school. Prior to this the children were taught by a governess. When the Hansboroughs left Standart, the population became zero, as they were the only residents in the town, with the nearest neighbors were a Mexican family at Pinto Junction, seven miles away. It should be noted that the family used the more German sounding name "Hansbrough" up until about WWI, when it was changed to "Hansborough", which did cause some resentment from family members. In 1918 the family moved to Dallas where John A. worked for the Willard Storage Battery Company as a salesman, and later as a station manager until 1929. In 1930, he was injured in a fall while serving on a jury, and this affected him the rest of his life. Photo locations in this collection include Standart, Texas, Del Rio, Texas, Alabama, Oregon, Wisconsin, San Antonio, and more. Many of the people are not identified, so we assume that they have some relationship to the Hansbrough and Hansborough families, but cannot say for certain. To the best of our knowledge, Standart was completely abandoned in 1989 and is today a ghost town. SIZE/WEIGHT: Approx. 3 3/4" x 2 3/8".
