A collection of two rare books: a Burmese to English Dictionary and Pali literature of Burma. Burmese is a Sino-Tibetan language spoken in Myanmar, where it is the official language, lingua franca, and the native language of the Bamar, the country’s principle ethnic group. Unlike other Southeast Asian languages, Burmese adopted words primarily from Pali rather than Sanskrit. Burmese literature tends to reflect local folklore and culture, and has historically been steeped in the Pali Canon of Buddhism. These books once resided in the prestigious library of language scholar Johannes Rahder (1898-1988). Rahder was a Dutch Orientalist and professor of Japanese at the University of Leiden from 1931 through 1946, and at Yale University from 1947 through 1965. He was depicted in the work of the legendary Langston Hughes' (1901-1967) 'I Wonder, I Wander'. After a brief meeting between the two figures on the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1933, Hughes recognized Rahder as being a "...famous authority on obscure Oriental languages". Rahder's Yale University and University of Leiden faculty stamps and pen markings can be found throughout these folios. FORN-SHELF-0754-BB-0424-eb0704
