Davis was an American lawyer who sponsored important excavations in the Valley of the Kings from 1902-1914, conducted by Howard Carter, Gaston Maspero and others. They discovered around thirty tombs, but after failing in his quest to find an intact royal tomb (he was only two metres away from discovering the entrance to Tutankhamun's tomb) the management of excavations passed to Lord Carnarvon, in 1915.Present here are three richly illustrated volumes detailing the excavations. The first work here is the very scarce 1908 'The Funeral Papyrus of Iouiya'. Illustrated with thirty-four monochrome reproductions of the papyrus. Collated, complete. CONDITION In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally, bright. Bumping to back strip head and tails, with small instances of light fading to board perimeters. Mark to front joint of 'Siphtah'. Front hinge of 'Papyrus' a touch tender. Inscription to verso of front free endpaper of 'Tiyi'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
