Description: I have here for sale a book entitled THE SAVAGE SOUTH SEAS painted by Norman H Hardy and described by E Way Elkington. It is a first edition published by A & C Black, London in 1907. It focuses on three main places - Papua New Guinea; The Solomon Islands; and The New Hebrides. Enhanced with 68 captioned tissue-guarded colour plates and a fold-out sketch map of the South Sea Islands.A first edition of this illustrated book about the South Seas around British New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and the New Hebrides. The Savage South Seas looks at the small islands around Australia and Asia, British New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and the New Hebrides, as they were all known in 1907 at the publication of this book. The book starts with a general history, before looking at the natives of the islands and the lives they lead. Written by Ernest Way Elkington, who travelled extensively during his life. He wrote about his travels and experiences, publishing Adrift in New Zealand, and Canada, the Land of Hope. Illustrated with a total of sixty-eight plates in colour by Norman Hardy. Collated and complete. Hardy was an illustrator who left England for Australia to work on 'The Sydney Mail', before contributing his illustrations to Elkington's book. He also travelled to China, and illustrated 'Women of all Nations' by Thomas Athol Joyce.Dark maroon full leather hardboards with a gilt decorative border and a Tottenham County School gilt motif to the centre of the front board. Spine has 5 raised bands, gilt tooling, a black leather title block and gilt lettering. Spine has faded to brown and is quite rubbed, chipped to head and tail. Some scuffs to board edges. Front board very loose. Gilt dentelle. Marbled endpapers with school prize bookplate to front one. One tear to prelim page along top edge. A few light patches of foxing but generally very clean. Pages are gilt edged. Condition overall: very good. 211 pages + 68 plates. 22 x 15 cm.We have over 2000 items in our Ebay shop on a wide range of subjects, so please feel free to have a browse and see if and anything else takes your fancy.
