Description: Here is a letter postmarked July 9, 1907 in Califon, NJ from A. S. Sutton of Califon to E. W. Sutton of Lebanon PO Hunterdon, Co. N. J. There is also a postmark on the back of the envelope, but I can't read it. The E. W. on the envelope is Erastus as stated in the letter greeting. I did some research and found that Erastus W. Sutton was born in New Jersey in 1876, the son of Aaron S. Sutton and his second wife, Mary Apgar. His obituary in the Sept. 4, 1954 Courier News said he was a pioneer in the telephone business, he founded the Lebanon Telephone Co. which became part of the New Jersey Telephone Co. He also served as Mayor of Lebanon for 14 years and was chairman of the Hunterdon County Democratic Executive Committee, he also served as Superintendent of Weights and Measures. He was married to Angeline Rinehart. The letter could be written by his father Aaron S. Sutton, since the sender's initials are A. S. It mentions that a Mr. Blanch overpaid on something in March and that we should pay 1 dollar to Harman Beavan(?) as it belongs to him. He also mentions that he is busy in hay and asking if he can spar Roy for two or three days to help with the crops. That's as well as I can read the writing. According to Find A Grave, Aaron owned 5 farms in addition to the one he farmed, plus had property in Newark, NJ. His first wife was Sarah Anderson. The envelope has some discoloring and was opened by the receiver by tearing off the one end. The letter was folded to fit into the envelope, but is in good shape.
