1906 SEATTLE, Washington ACTUAL DENNY HOTEL DEMOLITION PHOTOS, From Family Album

Description: This and the other listings of similar grouping of vintage photos we currently have are from the Seattle, Washington Lewis Gates Whittelsey family photo album. He was a clerk employed with the Water Department and he took many photos of Seattle around the turn of the century, 1910's and 1920's. In particular, he took photos of the Regrade projects where many buildings and hills were razed and lowered in elevation with much of the fill going to the downtown area to fill in the "swamp" areas that are now waterfront. This auction is for 1 (one) page that contains 4 (four) photos; Two are of the Denny Hotel demolition and regrade of 2nd Avenue, and two on the other side are of the Plymouth Congregational Church located on 3rd Avenue and University Street that was torn down in 1913.The Denny Hotel: Or Hotel Washington, depending on when in its short life you were naming it. The Denny Hotel began development by Arthur Denny and several other investors in 1889, but only a shell went up initially. The panic of 1893 stalled construction for nearly a decade, until James Moore bought the property and in short order turned it into the grand "scenic hotel in the West" that it was planned to be. But it's location at the peak of Denny Hill (along Third Avenue between Stewart and Virginia streets) proved its life short. In 1903, President Teddy Roosevelt stayed in the grand hotel and boosted its reputation for the last three years of its life. Moore's hotel was razed during the Denny Regrade, which lowered the ground beneath the hotel by about 100 feet between 1906 and 1907.The 4 photos are each about 4 3/4" by 3 3/4", and mounted on a single page back to back, and they are in good condition with age and handling wear, and wrinkling/ slight damages as seen in the photo. The Old Happenings lettering is Not on the item.See our other listings for More antique Seattle, WA Whittelsey Family photos.
