Description: I have here for sale a book entitled OLD WEST SURREY Some Notes and Memories by Gertrude Jekyll. It is a first edition published by Longmans, Green and Co, London in 1904. It has 330 b/w photographic illustrations throughout the book, some of which are full page. The area covered is from the Hog's Back to the North to the Weald of Sussex to the south. We wander from South of Dorking on the east to Woolmer Forest and Gilbert White's country in the west. Gertrude Jekyll grew up in this area and has focused her affectionate account of the area on the smaller details - articles of furniture, ordinary household items found in the cottages and farmhouses, the cottage industries, tools used, rural industries like wheelwrights, cottage gardens, churchyards, and even smuggling in the area. A wonderful look at the Surrey of a bygone era.Gertrude Jekyll, the famous horticulturist, garden designer, craftswoman, photographer, writer and artist, grew up in this area of Surrey from the age of 5 and bought and redesigned the gardens in her home, Munstead Wood, near Godalming.Bound in olive green cloth hardboards with gilt title lettering set within a decorative oval framework to the front board and spine.
