In addition to descriptions of and meditations on nature, he wrote verses idealizing the freedom fighters of Greece, Italy, and other lands; poems of romantic and tragic passion, such as “Monument Mountain” (1824); and tributes to Native Americans. While visiting Germany in 1835 he was fascinated by German Romanticism and wove its folk themes into his own work.
