Description: A large mid 18th century Chinese export enamelled porcelain bier mug from the Nanking cargo shipwreck depicting a peony tree on a terrace. In great condition with just some light fritting to a section of the handle. Much of the enamel is intact and there is a nice balance throughout of preserved detail and that which has washed away / reacted. Typically other examples have lost most of their enamel detailing and are left with just the underglaze blue. Mugs from the cargo are much rarer than say tea bowls or plates, and this example I believe to be the largest size variant of the style - most are a few centimetres shorter in height and diameter. There are remnants of what appears to be the circular Christie's Nanking Cargo sticker on its underside, the size of it and placement of off-centred numbers is consistent. Obviously I cannot be certain it is indeed the sticker, but a round one was placed underneath and it is very likely to be that due to the sizing and what the item is. Height: 13.5 cm - Diameter: 10.75 cm - Max diameter (with handle): 15.5 cm Please inspect images thoroughly and enlarge, if you have any questions or require more photographs please do not hesitate to ask.
