Description: Wonderful candid photograph of poet Joaquin Miller, his daughter and grandson taken by Sausalito photographer Isabel Porter Collins (originally Isabel Margaret Porter) in 1898. Notated on the back: "Glass photo negative taken about 1898 by Isabel Margaret Porter (Collins)--Joaquin Miller, his daughter Lily, grandson Aloysious". It measures 8" by 10" on thick matte stock and with slight bowing. (Photograph does not have purple watermark). This is not the glass negative, but a large photograph produced by Collins and from her personal collection. In addition to the pencil notation, she has stamped it with her name on the back. Collins attended the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in San Francisco about 1898 and perhaps that is where she met Joaquin. I also am listing a smaller version of this photo with another woman in it that may be Miller's sister, and will be listing more original photographs from her collection this week. From Wikipedia: Cincinnatus Heine Miller (1837 – 1913), better known by his pen name Joaquin Miller was an American poet, author, and frontiersman. He is nicknamed the "Poet of the Sierras" after the Sierra Nevada, about which he wrote in his Songs of the Sierras.
