Written by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. With rare white endpapers and publisher's name as "Longmans" to the tail of the spine rather than "Longmans & Co." as issued on copies with brown swan and sailing ship endpapers. A misprint on p. 96, line 12, where the word "issue" has been printed as "issued" as cited in "A Bibliography of the Works of Sir Henry Rider Haggard 1859-1925" by J. E. Scott.
