Description: ****NOTE: THE PAINTING LOOKS MORE LIKE THE INDOOR PICTURE WITH THE DARKER TONING. OUTDOOR PHOTOS ARE MUCH LIGHTER**** For sale is a wonderful and historic original watercolor painting of the steamer ship Puritan from the Fall River Line of steamer ships that served the East Coast from Boston to New York City. The Fall River Line was a combination steamboat and railroad connection between New York City and Boston that operated between 1847 and 1937. It consisted of a railroad journey between Boston and Fall River, Massachusetts, where passengers would then board steamboats for the journey through Narragansett Bay and Long Island Sound to the line's own Hudson River dock in Manhattan. For many years, it was the preferred route to take for travel between the two major cities. The line was extremely popular, and its steamboats were some of the most advanced and luxurious of their day. Her Specs: Length - Over 420 feet Length at Waterline - 404 Width across Guards - 91 feet Breadth of Hull - 52 feet Tonnage 4500 Depth of Hold - 21' 4" Engines - 7500 Horsepower The ship illlustration was made by a C F (or C P) Kenniston of Boothbay Harbor Maine. We couldn't narrow down which member of the Kenniston family this is the the Kenniston family is a historic family in the Boothbay Harbor area beginning with David Kenniston, who was a soldier in the revolutionary war, and also later was a prominent shipbuilder and landowner in Boothbay Harbor Maine. So we assume probably the same family. But we are unsure. More research is needed. The painting done in watercolor, ink and gouache was executed in exquisite detail. The artist taking artistic license with limited space to work with on the US flag including only 30 stars when in 1897 there were 45 stars on the flag with the admission of Utah as the 45 state. A wonderful work which should hopefully find its way back to a historical society or important private collection Condition: Overall toning to the paper. Possibly still retaining an old acidic cardboard backer board that should be replaced with archival quality materials. A water stain to the lower right side.
