Description: 1892 IL HK-224A PLATE EXAMPLE SO-CALLED DOLLAR COLUMBIAN EXPO COLUMBUS BUST NGC MS 65 BN THIS MEDAL IS THE PLATE EXAMPLE PICTURED IN THE 2008 SECOND EDITION OF THE SO-CALLED DOLLAR REFERENCE CATALOG. THIS MEDAL WAS PREVIOUSLY OWNED BY TOM HOFFMAN, AS THE PLATE PICTURE WAS ATTRIBUTED TO HIM. TOM HOFFMAN WAS ONE OF THE EDITORS OF THE 2008 SECOND EDITION OF THE SO-CALLED DOLLARS CATALOG. HK-224A, EGLIT 207, SH 6-154 BZ. TIED FOR TOP POP OF ONLY (7) LISTED IN THE NGC CENSUS AS OF 1/2024. THESE ARE NGC'S PICTURES. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SEVERAL WHITE SPECS PICTURED ON THE OBVERSE ARE NOT ACTUALLY ON THE MEDAL. ANOTHER NGC GRADED MS 65 EXAMPLE OF THIS TYPE SOLD FOR $706.60 ON EBAY IN MAY 2021. BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT MY EXAMPLE IS THE PLATE MEDAL PICTURED IN THE 2008 SECOND EDITION OF THE SO-CALLED DOLLAR CATALOG. THIS TYPE IS LISTED AS RARITY R-6 IN JEFF SHEVLIN'S AND BILL HYDER'S NEW SO-CALLED DOLLAR BOOK, BUT I BELIEVE IT TO BE RARER, PROBABLY R-7 (11-20 KNOWN). A well executed high relief bust of Columbus paired with a scene of Columbus landing in America. The dies are not signed, and the engraver is unknown. The same Columbus obverse die used for SH 6-154 through SH 6-157. The 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian exposition was the ultimate showcase for many new inventions and marvels of the late 19th century. By the time the fair closed on October 30, 1893, a quarter of U.S. population had walked through with gates, over 27,500 people. The Fair encompassed, almost 700 acres of influential architecture, wonderful exhibits and novel entertainment. It was an awe-inspiring site. 181 so-called dollars were struck in various compositions for this exposition. MY NGC REGISTRY SET "BRUCE THOMAS COLLECTION OF SO-CALLED DOLLARS AND OTHER MEDALS" WAS VOTED AS THE BEST CUSTOM SET FOR 2018 BY THE NGC REGISTRY AWARDS. I AM VERY PROUD OF THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT, AND THANKS TO NGC FOR THIS HONOR. PLEASE BE ASSURED OF A FLAWLESS AND EASY TRANSACTION BY MY 100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK WHILE SELLING MANY NUMISMATIC ITEMS IN THE PAST 20 YEARS. I WILL BE LISTING MANY MORE EXONUMIA ITEMS IN THE FUTURE, INCLUDING MANY SO-CALLED DOLLARS, DEWITT LISTED POLITICAL CAMPAIGN MEDALS, AND OTHER UNITED STATES HISTORIC MEDALS. THANK YOU FOR CONSIDERING MY LISTINGS TO ADD TO YOUR COLLECTION.
