Description: 19th CENTURY JAMAICAN LACEBARK FOLK ART DOILIESGROUP OF TEN(10) ANTIQUE JAMAICAN LACEBARK FOLK ART DOILIES, IN ORIGINAL, RIBBON-BOUND FOLDER. Jamaica: circa 1890s. Group of ten lacebark doilies in original folder (c.9x8 inches), plus 1 round paper, with mounted botanicals. First leaf has a mounted sheet, inscribed: “These D’Oyleys[sic] are made from the bark of the Lagetta Lintelies which grows in Jamaica. The dark borders are cut outs of the Spetha of the Breadfruit Tree. The light borders from the Spetha of the Mountain Cabbage Palin. Both of these trees grow in some of the West Indian Islands.” The ten lacebark doilies show varying wear; front cover and round paper insert has lost much of the pressed flowers. They are incredibly fragile, but most have survived well in this folder for over 100 years. A few show loss of botanicals, few pinholes, but most are intact and in excellent condition. Please see images to best assess condition. A wonderful example of 19th century Jamaican folk art. Likely marketed to early tourists, and I’ve seen one example that was sold to support an orphanage. We have been selling on eBay for more than 2 decades. Our feedback speaks for itself, so purchase with confidence.
