1888 Boston College, First, Class of Grammar award! Sterling, Feeley & Co., RI!

Description: Up for bid is a sterling silver pin/medal, made by Feeley & Co., Gold & Silversmiths, Providence, R.I. for Boston College and awarded in 1888 to John J. Cadigan for "First Class of Grammar"! This piece really has a lot going for it! Our research tells us that John J. Cadigan was the son of Irish immigrants and was born around 1871 and attended Boston College from the late 1880's to the early 1890's! Boston College was a fairly new college as it was established in just 1863, and with three teachers and twenty three students, opened in 1864. Our research shows that after attending Boston College, Mr. Cadigan went on to attend Harvard Medical School and also spent time as the Latin Department Head at the Boston Latin School. He died on June 6, 1937 at the age of 66. The medal weighs 16.6 grams, is composed of sterling silver. It has been tested with our XRF gun to determine the metal composition. The medal has no makers mark or metal composition stamps. The medal is about 2 1/2" tall and 2" wide. The case is original to the medal. Feeley & Co. of Providence are famous makers of religious items such as chalices and ciboriums and their products command a high premium on the open market. Rarely, if ever, does one find medals of this age and quality, let alone medals from a metalworking company that is this very well respected.
