Bound in half-calf on marbled boards. This is a copy of the popular Victorian self-help book by Samuel Smiles, often referred to as 'the bible of mid-Victorian liberalism'. This work depicts virtues of self-help, industry, and perseverance, with concepts borrowed from eighteenth-century Enlightenment. Contents include 'Self-Help- National and Individual', 'Leaders of Industry- Inventors and Producers', and 'Helps and Opportunities- Scientific Pursuits'. Written by Samuel Smiles (1812-1904), a Scottish author and government reformer. This work reflects his political beliefs, such as the idea that poverty is caused by irresponsible habits and that materialism and laissez-faire governments are dangerous. Collated, complete. CONDITION Bound in half-calf on marbled boards. Externally, generally smart. Some edge wear and rubbing to the extremities and the spine. The head of spine is beginning to pull away from the binding. Marks to boards with light discolouration along front band of joint. Front paste down is worn with some residue from what might have been an illustrated bookplate. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, with light age-toning to margins.
