Description: Here is a very nice old commemorative medal made of copper, in quite splendid condition overall, measuring app. 2" across, with a plain edge about 1/4" thick, and it weighs an impressive 3.2 ounces. This beautiful award shows hardly any wear, with only some tiny imperfections nothing overly distracting, and I have not done anything to alter or enhance its appearance, with four of the photos having been "enhanced" for clarity. It still retains much of its lovely original mint red color, and it has toned in a very pleasing manner over the many years since it was struck. The variety is identified in Harkness as Ny-190, and Henrietta Louisa Mehrer patented this furniture item in the previous year, 1885. The obverse pictures a seated, Liberty-like figure extending a laurel wreath to the left, her other arm resting on an American shield topped by a proud eagle, and she holds a pole surmounted by a "Liberty Cap". A ship in front of hills is in the left background, while one can see a spinning wheel as well as symbols of agricultural bounty in the foreground, including a plow with a caduceus between its handles. "The American Institute" is across the top, with "New York" at the bottom. The reverse has "The Medal Of Excellence Awarded To" as struck, at the top, with "Mrs. H. L. Mehrer, - For a Chiffonier & Folding Wardrobe." engraved beneath, the date "1886." at the bottom, all encircled by a joined, berried leafy wreath. Superb. $200. Please note I am always happy to combine shipping costs should you win more than one of my auctions, and I usually add just a minimal additional cost per item. Your business is sincerely appreciated!
