Description: An illustrated account of a day spent at Moor Street Police Court in 1886 by an unamed author. Some splitting on folds and tatty edges. With provenance, originally belonging to John Cuming Walters (1863-1933) author, scholar and journalist. He was educated at King Edward’s Grammar School, Birmingham (which William Kineton Parkes also attended). He was the author of a number of books, thousands of articles and would regularly deliver lectures, himself being an actual or corresponding member of near on fifty literary societies. He was a central figure in the literary life of the north-west of England, and was an authority on Shakespeare, Tennyson and Dickens. Walters was also editor of the Manchester City News for twenty-five years, and the Manchester Evening Chronicle. His journalistic achievements including a year-long successful 'anti-slum campaign', when writing for Birmingham Daily Gazette the series of, articles Scenes in Slum-Land, which led to appointment of Sanitary Council and Housing Committee, the erection of a Rowton House, and revision of municipal policy.Walters was the first to advocate and secure the adoption of an examination scheme for entrance into the journalistic profession. John Cuming Walters' interests included Shakespeare, Baconians, Charles Dickens, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Edward De Vere, King Arthur, Defoe and The Man In The Iron Mask, spiritualism, science-fiction (Sneape's Spirit) and "mysteries", alongside his involvement in the cultural community in Northwest England. He corresponded with William Salt Brassington (1859-1939), Frederic Henry Fisher, George Frisbee, Granville George Greenwood (1850-1928), William Jaggard (1868-1947), Horace Nickson, Cecil Palmer, John Lewis Alexander Paton (1863-1946), Richard Savage, Bernard Rowland Ward (1863-1933), Sir William Henry Bailey (1838-1913), and William S. Smedley. His published works include Phases of Dickens: The Man, His Message and His Mission and The Mystery of Shakespeare's Sonnets, In Tennysonland(1890), Tennyson:Poet, Philosopher, Idealist (1893) &The Lost Land of King Arthur (1909) Walters also wrote books about English regions, such asd The Spell of Yorkshire, Lancashire Ways & Romantic Cheshire. In 1932, Walters estimated that he had written between 15,000 and 20,000 leading articles, nearly 20,000 reviews of books, 8,000 dramatic notices, and 15,000 special articles. In exact condition shown in photographs, which are provided as best description.
