Description: I have here for sale a signed limited edition of BEWICK GLEANINGS, BEING IMPRESSIONS FROM COPPERPLATES AND WOODBLOCKS ENGRAVED INTHE BEWICK WORKSHOP by JULIA BOYD. This being #128 of The Small Paper Copies and signed by the author. Published in 1886 by ANDREW REID, Newcastle. With 53 tissue guarded plates together at the rear of this volume, plus 72 pages of multiple images and illustrations through the text, facsimile of letter. With red and black title lettering to both half title and title vignette. In two parts, the first being notes on the Lives of Thomas Bewick and his pupils, the second part being the reprinted woodblocks. Thomas Bewick (c. 11 August 1753 – 8 November 1828) was an English wood-engraver and natural history author. Early in his career he took on all kinds of work such as engraving cutlery, making the wood blocks for advertisements, and illustrating children's books. He gradually turned to illustrating, writing and publishing his own books, gaining an adult audience for the fine illustrations in A History of Quadrupeds. Nicely bound in original Moroccan leather boards. Gilt title lettering to both the front board and spine. Boards are bevelled. Internal gilt dentelle. Gilt top fore-edge. This book is in excellent condition, tightly bound with no loose or missing pages. xxiv,108,104pp,plates 25cm x 20cm.
