1881 LETTER - JULIUS H. SEELYE - AMHURST COLLEGE PRESIDENT - AUTHOR & POLITICIAN

Description: We are offering a handwritten letter dated July 1, 1881, on Amhurst College stationery, to Rev. D. Wortman from Julius Hawley Seelye, clergyman, educator, author and politician. Julius H. Seelye (1824-1895) - attended Amhurst College and the Auburn Theological Seminary, was ordained and served as pastor of the 1st Dutch Reform Church. He studied philosophy in Germany and was appointed Professor of Mental & Moral Philosophy of Amhurst College, serving in that capacity from 1858 until 1890. Seelye served as President of Amhurst College from 1877 to 1890; and served as U.S. Representative from Massachusetts 10th District from 1875 to 1877. Seelye accomplished much, much more during his lifetime of service, including writing numerous books. In the letter, Seelye asks Rev. Wortman if he knows when "Mr. Marquand" will be coming to Saratoga. He mentions that he will be attending the Kant Centennial in Saratoga and would like to meet Mr. Marquand in Saratoga sometime. [Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher, called the "father of modern ethics", the "father of modern aesthetics", and the "father of modern philosophy] Seeley also mentions his desire to establish a fund to aid indigent [poor and needy] sons of ministers and missionaries in obtaining a college education.
