1880's-1890's IXL SMALL SIZE IRON TOY SAFE STILL BANK, 2 7/8" x 2 1/4" x 2 5/16"

Description: In this listing we are offering an example of an original cast iron small version of the "IXL" iron toy safe bank. This bank was patented July 12, 1881, design patent number D0012357. Patent was assigned to the inventors Louis Kyser and Alfred C. Rex and was produced by the Kyser and Rex Co. in Frankford, Pennsylvania. It was produced in the 1880’s to 1890’s. An example of this bank is pictured & listed as number 263 in the "Safe Bank Book" by Michael Holz. This example is original including the original top to bottom center bolt as well as an original & properly functioning interior lock. The key is an old & properly made iron recast in the correct shape of the original & the key works correctly on the lock. The bank shows some wear to the paint. But, the majority of the original black & dark green paint is present & a lovely rich patina has developed from use. There are no chips & no repairs. But, there is a 1/2 inch long thin hairline crack on the top front edge at the 12 o'clock position. This bank is the delightfully charming small version of this design which was produced in more than one size. The size is 2 7/8 inches tall by 2 1/4 inches wide by 2 5/16 inches deep.
