This original newspaper contains a front page headline: "IMMIGRATION STATISTICS" with a 1/4 column report with statistics on immigration to the US organized by COUNTRY of ORIGIN. Many of these immigrants were Jews fleeing persecution in their home countries.Between 1880 and 1924, approximately 2.5 million Jews from Eastern Europe, including Romania, left their homelands and settled in the United States, a period known as the great wave of Jewish migration. In the first decade of the 20th century, Jewish emigration from Romania increased more rapidly than any other country, with nearly 30% of Romania's Jewish population immigrating to America between 1881 and 1914. This led Joseph Kissman to call it the "Rumanian exodus". The main reasons for this emigration were economic hardship, persecution, and the social and political upheavals of the 19th century, such as industrialization, overpopulation, and urbanization. In Romania, the Liberal party governments of Carol of Hohenzollern also discriminated against foreigners, especially Jews, after the Constitution of 1866. Most of the Jewish immigrants settled in rapidly growing cities on the East Coast and Midwest, especially New York and Chicago, where they found jobs in the garment industry, cigar manufacturing, food services, and construction. Many also settled in industrial centers in Pennsylvania and Delaware, as well as in areas around the Great Lakes such as Cleveland, Chicago, and Detroit. In 1881, the decade prior to the opening of Ellis Island, the mass migration of Jews to America began. The assassination of Russian Tsar Alexendar II in 1881 was widely blamed on the Jews. A series of pogroms (a Russian word meaning to wreak havoc) started in Elizavetgrad, now located in modern Ukraine. The pogroms spread across southern Russia and Ukraine – Jewish owned stores and businesses were attacked and their property was destroyed.Tsar Alexander III enacted a series of anti-Semitic laws in 1882, known as the “May Laws.” These laws restricted where Jews could settle, forbade non-Jews from issuing mortgages to Jews, and prohibited Jews from conducting business on Sundays. With little alternative, tens of thousands of Russian Jews joined by Jews from Eastern European countries controlled by Russia, made their way to America. Between 1881 and 1910 the American Jewish Yearbook estimates that over 1.5 million Jews had come to America, of those more than 70% came from Russia. Very good condition.
