Description: This is a cool find that I haven’t seen before. It is a coastal etching of Block Island’s elevation on a paper which has tissue paper lightness and qualities. The paper has a watermark that says Crane & Co 1880. I couldn’t find anything like it. Crane & Co is one of the oldest papermaking businesses in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, where paper has been manufactured since the early 19th century. Provenance: This item was found amongst a large collection of maps, dating from the mid to late 19th century, which were part of an estate of a collector. It is in surprisingly good shape for its age, with some minor tanning and foxing. Found folded and will ship folded. Pencil in corner noting the location. Roughly 11.5 x 24.5”
