Description: THIS IS THE FIRST BOOK BY KATE GREENAWAY. There is no date of publication, but key First Printing points for the year of the First Edition, 1878, are present. I cannot determine whether this is a First Printing or an Early Printing, or perhaps the First Printing of the First American Edition. The most expensive listings of these claiming "First Issue", "First Edition", or "First Printing" identify these points: "End of Contents" on page 14, the imprint on the verso of title page, and full page illustrations on pages 21 and 35 with a witch carrying a child on page 63 - these three illustrations not present in later printings. The George Routledge address on the title page is "New York... 9 Lafayette Place", and the imprint of the verso of the title page is also a New York address. This might indicate a First American Printing. In any case, all of these issue points are shown in the listing photos, so you can decide. Overall in GOOD OR BETTER CONDITION - better than most I have seen online for these first or early printings. There is a Christmas 1881 inscription on the blue endpaper. Boards with moderate to heavy corner and top/bottom spine wear, mostly clean and bright front and rear boards (see listing photos), very solidly bound with no further markings, no endpaper cracking, clean bright pages with no markings other than this endpaper inscription.
