Description: Wooden (black walnut) plaque, commemorative from 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Celebration, picturing the Main Building. The following details are from "Die Pressed Wooden Medals & Plaques of the 1876 Centennial By Dr. Donald G. Tritt" 1876 Main Building Centennial Plaque (blank reverse), 1876. 68mm x 100mm (10mm). Black Walnut. [Obv.] In center, Main Building with an island demarcation and twenty seven flags flying L. Above in an arc, 4mm letters, CENTENNIAL EXPOSITION. Below, 4mm letters in straight line, MAIN BUILDING. Signed lower R, A. H. Rope edging around. [Rev.] BLANK. Construction of the Main Building, the largest of the Centennial at 21.5 acres, began August, 1874 and was completed February 14, 1876. The signature “A. H.” in the lower right indicates that Adolph A. Hartmann, Sr. (1817-1887) was the die sinker. Born in Germany he came to America prior to 1857 and worked for a time at Scovill in Waterbury, Connecticut. These rectangle plaques were issued singly in pastel-colored boxes some with a paste-in label showing Adams & Co. of Philadelphia as the selling agent Thanks for reading my listing!
