Description: Modern Reproduction (1876), France-USA Friendship, Trade, medallion, Dupre (French Designer). OBVERSE (minted): Beautiful Indian princess taking the Horn of Plenty from the speed messenger Mercury. Minted: "TO PEACE AND COMMERCE" and "IV JUL. MDCCLXXVI" (4th of July, 1776), "Dupre.F." (Augustin Dupre). REVERSE: Hand engraved "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, PEACE-TRADE- FRIENDSHIP, 1790". BLUE SILK NECK CORD. Bronze Finish, 2 1/2" ROUND. I'm not a professional numismatist, but there is another number on the obverse (minted), located on the bottom right, under the Roman numeral "XV", please see the high resolution 4500DPI scan photo, above. The date under the Roman numerals is 1876. This is the date that the copy dies by US Mint Chief engraver Charles Barber were made. His name is on the front on the left side, but looks to have been ground off on this medal. This medal is a modern re-strike of the diplomatic medal. It was struck as either a uniface, (one sided) or the reverse was ground off. The handfull of original diplomatic medals were struck at the Paris mint in 1792 not 1790. They sell for six figures when they rarely come up for auction. Conclusion: 1876. Not an original 1790 medal. In 1783 Augustin Dupre engraved a different medallion, designed and commissioned by Benjamin Franklin while serving as Ambassador to France (see above last photo "Libertas Americana"), concerning French American friendship in the Revolutionary war in 1776. Provenance: Originally from the Somers Mountain Museum (in Connecticut) circa 1970, then from the collections of American Indian Historians Tex Mulnite (deceased) and Chet Mulka.
