Description: Antique Fluting Iron by Crown and is embossed on the top side of base last patent date - PAT. NOVEMBER 2, 1875 .Embossed on the underside is: American Machine Co. Philadelphia, PA. The American Machine Company manufactured these fluting irons for the CROWN Company.These type of irons were used to crimp fabric such as collars, cuffs and ruffling on shirts when warm and paper when rollers used cold. The iron is in good used condition(GUC) with 2 original fluting barrels. Heated wood or metal rods(NOT INCLUDED) were heated then inserted into fluting barrels. The fabric was then clamped between the barrels and by turning of the attached wood handled crank the fabric was rolled between the two barrels, the heat crimping the fabric.There is a front clamp to secure the fluting machine to a work surface.Fluted barrels are brass.The iron weighs about 8 pounds and the base measures 9" x 6.
