Description: Nice complete 120-page number of the American Edition of Blackwood's Magazine for August 1875. A little soil to wrappers, but otherwise an uncommon bright copy. It includes: Frederic Marshall and French military writer A.J. LeFaure's opening longer essay (16 pages) on the state of the French Army in July 1875, which was pretty dismal, following their defeat during the Franco-Prussion War of 1870-71. Lucy Bethia (Colquhoun) Walford's story "Nan: A Summer Scene." Margaret Oliphant's longer (21 pages) essay simply called "Rivers." This is an item of some interest as she reviews new works on "Holidays on French Rivers" and others concerned with the course and travels upon the French rivers Loire and the Moselle along with two other works on the River Thames in Britain. A nice read for anyone planning on gliding up or down these most memorable waterways 148 years after this essay first appeared. Part IV of General George T. Chesney's serial novel, The Dilemma. Other essays, reviews, etc. Author identifications above are drawn from the Wellesley Index (I, 143).
