Description: JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH A Complete Account of the Wonderful and Thrilling Adventures of the Intrepid Subterranean Explorers, Prof. Von Hardwigg, His Nephew Harry, and Their Icelandic Guide, Hans Bjelke. Translated from the French of Jules Verne with illustrations by Riou. Published by Henry L. Shepard & Co., Boston. There is no printing or copyright date, but this is the “unauthorized” or so-called “pirate edition” of Verne’s work. As such it is the second American edition, following the 1873 (dated 1874) Scribner, Armstrong first edition and shortly before the “deluxe edition” published by Scribner, Armstrong later in 1874. Unfortunately, for Verne-O-philes, this book is an abridged and altered translation. It changes the Professor's name to Hardwigg, Axel's name to Harry (or Henry) Lawson, and Gräuben's name to Gretchen. It omits some chapters while rewriting or adding portions to others. It derives from the first 1871 English-language edition published by Griffith and Farran of London and is basically the same translation used in the first American edition. This translation is the most familiar and popularly reprinted one, despite the flaws. The book includes 15 of the original first edition illustrations. The book was bound with the pictures in random order. It is indicative of the hurried production by the publishers of this book to get it in stores as fast as possible. From Wikipedia: Journey to the Center of the Earth (French: Voyage au centre de la Terre, also translated under the titles A Journey to the Centre of the Earth and A Journey to the Interior of the Earth ) is an 1864 science fiction novel by Jules Verne. The story involves German professor Otto Lidenbrock who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the centre of the Earth. He, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans descend into the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjökull, encountering many adventures, including prehistoric animals and natural hazards, before eventually coming to the surface again in southern Italy, at the Stromboli volcano.
