Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique Vanity Fair caricature 'Cotillon', [Mr. Augustus Savile, better known to the world as Augustus Lumley, the foremost leader of cotillons and genius of the ballroom in days gone by.] DATE PRINTED: 1874, dated on the print.SIZE: The printed area of the view, including titles, is approximately 19 x 33.5 cm, 7.5 x 13.5 inches (medium). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: APE. Carlo Pellegrini (25 March 1839 – 22 January 1889), who did much of his work under the pseudonym of Ape, was an Italian artist who served from 1869 to 1889 as a caricaturist for Vanity Fair magazine, a leading journal of London society. He was born in Capua, then in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. His father came from an ancient land-owning family, while his mother was allegedly descended from the Medici. His work for the magazine made his reputation and he became its most influential artist. PROVENANCE: A print published in Vanity Fair, 1874. Vanity Fair was a British weekly magazine that was published from 1868 to 1914. Founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles in London, the magazine included articles on fashion, theatre, current events as well as word games and serial fiction. The cream of the period’s "society magazines", it is best known for its witty prose and caricatures of famous people of Victorian and Edwardian society, including artists, athletes, royalty, statesmen, scientists, authors, actors, business people and scholars.TYPE: Antique colour lithograph printed on paper. There is no additional postage charge if you order more than one print.BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Augustus William Lumley-Savile, renamed Augustus William Savile in 1881, (1829, London – 13 April 1887, Cannes) was an English landowner and Her Majesty's Assistant Master of the Ceremonies. John Lumley-Savile, 8th Earl of Scarbrough was Augustus William Lumley-Savile's father. Lord Scarbrough never married but engendered five natural children, four sons and one daughter. The earl bequeathed the family estates to his second son Captain Henry Lumley (d. 1881), and on Captain Lumley's death the estates passed to Augustus William Lumley-Savile, who was the youngest of the four sons. In 1883 the family estates consisted of 17,820 acres in Nottinghamshire and 16,000 acres in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The principal residence was Rufford Abbey, near Ollerton.
