Description: THE CLIFF-CLIMBERS Or, The Lone Home In The Himalayas A Sequel to “The Plant-Hunters.” Written by Captain Mayne Reid with illustrations. Published by James R. Osgood and Company, Boston. This is a later printing—1873. It first appeared in 1864, published by Ticknor & Fields. Osgood was Ticknor’s successor and had exclusive rights to Reid’s books in 1869. There are 8 black and white illustration plates including the frontispiece. From Wikipedia: Thomas Mayne Reid (April 4, 1818 – October 22, 1883), was a Scots-Irish American novelist. "Captain" Reid wrote many adventure novels akin to those written by Frederick Marryat and Robert Louis Stevenson. He was a great admirer of Lord Byron. These novels contain action that takes place primarily in untamed locations including, but not limited to: the American West, Mexico, South Africa, the Himalayas, and Jamaica. In 1850 Reid published his first novel, The Rifle Rangers. This was followed by The Scalp Hunters (1851; dedicated to Commodore Edwin W. Moore, whom he met in 1841), The Desert Home (1852), and The Boy Hunters (1853). The last, set in Texas and Louisiana, was a "juvenile scientific travelogue" that become a favorite with young Theodore Roosevelt, who became a Reid fan. DESCRIPTION: 304 pages 7 x 4 3/4 inches 1873 embossed gilt decorated green cloth hardcover CONDITION: As usual with my books I have included many (in this case 16) high definition photos of the book. I try my best to show all major flaws. This book is in good, unrestored, condition. The corners and spine ends of the book are worn and frayed. The cloth is mostly clean, but slightly darkened. There are old paper name labels pasted to the front and rear pastedowns. The front endpaper is tender - torn at the hinge an inch or so at top and bottom. There is an old name stamp on the 2nd and 3rd blank endpapers, the title page and the first page of text. The pages show mild toning for the age of the book. All pages, illustrations, endpapers, etc. are present (the tissue guard at the frontispiece is loose but present) with the book.
