Description: THE LIFE AND TRAVELS OF MUNGO PARK WITH A SUPPLEMENTARY CHAPTER DETAILING THE RESULTS OF RECENT DISCOVERY IN AFRICA No Author Stated* (Mungo Park) 1869 First American Edition Virtue and Yorston New York Hardcover, 336 pages plus 24 pages (Nimmo) publisher's catalogue Mungo Park- likely not the first name you might think of when it comes to African explorers, but perhaps it should be. Mungo Park (1771 – 1806) was a Scottish explorer of West Africa. After an exploration of the upper Niger River around 1796, he wrote a popular and influential travel book titled Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa in which he theorized the Niger and Congo merged to become the same river, though it was later proven that they are different rivers. He was killed during a second expedition, having successfully travelled about two-thirds of the way down the Niger. *This book is similar to Nimmo's "The Life and Travels of Mungo Park" (first published in 1838) which also did not credit the author, but it was likely Mungo Park himself. The page count (336) is the same as editions published by Nimmo in the 1870s, but without illustrations, except for the frontispiece portrait of Mungo Park. While numerous editions and versions of this book have been published throughout the years (mostly in the 19th, and reprinted in either paperback or fancy bindings in the 21st), there seems to be fewer 19th century American editions, and fewer editions without illustrations. Although illustrations might have been nice, the book has a kind of fancy cover (gilt and black designs and lettering), and all page edges gilt. After you're done reading it, it will look nice on your library shelf! BOOK DESCRIPTION/CONDITION: 1869 American Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
