Description: Here is an almost impossible book to find but the condition is bad. This is Spencer's English Grammar, by John T. Spencer, but he died at Vicksburg in the Civil War and this was published posthumously. English Grammar Simplified and Adapted to All Classes of Learners for the use of schools and academies by John T. Spencer A.M., edited by S.A. Hayden, revised stereotype edition published in New Orleans in 1866. In 1866 the state's General Assembly after the Civil War wanted to get it's citizens to all speak the same language so they paid to buy this textbook to pass out to it's schools. From the state records it appears they printed 750 for the schools so there probably aren't many left around. It is 208 pages with a couple advertisements in the back, but is messed up. The printer didn't organize the leaves right so whole sections are in the wrong places. And the foxing is rampant throughout it, along with some cover wear, heavy on the spine. There is an address sticker on the front flyleaf along with writing there. The hardcover book is just under 7.75 inches tall. It looks like William Evelyn was the publisher. This will be more clear than the digital photo shows.
