1866 Autograph Note Signed by Bvt. Brig. General James A. Hall

Description: 1866 Autograph Note Signed by Bvt. Brig. General James A. Hall Offered for your consideration is a short note written and signed by a brevet brigadier general in the Union Army, serving at the time on occupation duty in Georgia. Headlined “Savannah Ga” and dated “Feb. 22 1866”, this short note was addressed to “C L Pascal Esq” in “West Philadelphia”. The body of this note states “Dr Sir / Yours received. I am stationed at Savannah Ga.”, with the conclusion reading “Very Respectfully / Your Obt. Servt. / James A. Hall / Brvt. Brig. Genl.”. The back of the note is blank. It is accomplished in period ink on blue-lined white paper. Cursory research seems to indicate that the recipient, C. L. Pascal, was a prominent businessman in Philadelphia. It would appear that in 1861, he was in partnership with James M. Sullender in the manufacture of hats, of which they sold over $7600 worth to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for their militia. It is possible that this short note was in regard to a purchase, though this is not a certainty. This piece would frame nicely with a portrait of General Hall in uniform. James Abram Hall was born in Jefferson, Lincoln County, Maine on August 10, 1835. During the Civil War he served initially as a captain and commander of Battery B, 2nd Maine Light Artillery. It was while commanding this unit, on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, that Hall provided his greatest service. The unit was positioned by General John F. Reynolds, just before he was killed in the early stages of the engagement. The battery bravely defended the Chambersburg Pike, sustaining severe casualties. They were finally forced to join the retreat of the 1st Corps later in the day. Hall would serve as lieutenant colonel and commander of the 1st Battalion, Maine Light Artillery, and finally, as colonel and commander of the 2nd United States Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted brigadier general, United States Volunteers on March 7, 1865, for his Civil War service. Though little further information is available, it seems that Hall remained in the service after the close of the war, as the presently offered note was written while on occupation duty. James Abram Hall died on June 10, 1893 in Syracuse, New York and was buried in Hillside-Norris Cemetery in Damariscotta, Lincoln County, Maine. The presently offered note exhibits signs of expected period use, followed by years of less than ideal storage. Light toning is noted across the entire surface, imparting to the paper an off-white to beige appearance. This toning is slightly darker at the edges and along the folds, especially on the back. Numerous foxing spots can be seen scattered across the back, though most of these are small and unobtrusive. Significantly more noticeable are the many large stains visible on both sides, with a few darker ones on the back at the left. These stains do not affect the legibility of the document, though they do detract from the overall eye-appeal of the piece. As noted earlier, this piece is accomplished in period ink on blue-lined white paper, with only minor corrosion associated with the manuscript material. The edges are slightly irregular, this piece appearing to have been cut from a larger sheet of paper, with the current overall dimensions being 6⅛ x 7¼ inches. While not of the best quality, this piece would make a nice addition to any Civil War autograph collection, or a wonderful item to frame with a portrait of General Hall. A $6.95 charge will be added to the winning bid for postage and insurance. A $5.00 charge will be added to any item picked up in person at our physical location.
