Description: TEN IMPORTANT PAPERS by P.A. Hansen (Peter Andreas Hansen). The papers were published at various times between 1865 and 1870. Most state: Leipzig, Bei S. Hirtzel. Text in German. Ten Papers Professionally Bound Together in hardcovers, half calf (leather spine and corners) and cloth covered boards, gilt lining to the spine and leather edges, gilt titling and designs to the spine, five raised spine bands, 7.5x11 inches, approximately 1350 pages (each paper paginated separately), and 4 folding plates. There is a handwritten list of the ten papers affixed to the front pastedown. Whoever had these ten papers professionally bound had a title “P. A. HANSEN’S MEMOIRS” printed in gilt on the spine. GOOD condition. The covers are cracking at the spine folds but holding well, there is a small shelving label near the bottom of the spine, there is wear to the spine ends and corner tips, the boards have some rubbing, overall the covers are solid and attractive. Internally, there is a handwritten table of contents on the front pastedown, as noted above; there is a circular ex library blindstamp on the title page (Cardinal Kayes Library / Manhattan College / New York) and a few other minor library numbers and marks on other pages; there are pencil translations and notes here and there, most notably on the title page of each paper; otherwise this bound collection is complete, tight, bright, clean and clear. The ten papers (with my rather poor English translations in parenthesis) are: (1) BESTIMMUNG der SONNENPARALLAZE durch VENUSVORÜBERÄNGE vor der SONNENSCHEIBE mit BESONDERER BERUCKSICHTIGUNG des im Jahre 1874 EINTREFFENDEN VORUBERGANGES. Mit ZWEI PANIGLOBEN. (The DETERMINATION of the SUNSET PARALLAX by means of VENUS TRANSITIONS before SUNSET with SPECIAL REVIEW of the INITIAL TRANSITION in 1874. With TWO HEMISPHERE MAPS.) Pagination: [4], 95 pages (pages numbered 457 to 552). With 2 folding hemisphere maps. Bei S. Hirzel, Leipzig, Germany, 1870. (2) THEORIE der SONNENFINSTERNISSE und VERWANDTEN ERSCHEINUNGEN. Mit 2 Tafeln. (THEORY of SUN ECLIPSES and RELATED APPEARANCES. With 2 Plates.) Pagination: [2], 150 pages (pages numbered [305] to 454). With 2 folding maps. Undated, circa 1870. (3) Die THEORIE des AEQUATOREALS. (THEORY of (?)) Pagination: [2], 72 pages (pages numbered [433] to 504). Undated, circa 1870. (4) RELATIONEN einestheils ZWISCHEN SUMMEN und DIFFERENZEN und anderntheils ZWISCHEN INTEGRALEN und DIFFERENTIALEN. (5) GEODÄTISCHE UNTERSUCHUNGEN. (GEODETIC STUDIES) Pagination: [4], 224 pages (numbered 1 to 224). Bei S. Hirzel, Leipzig, Germany, 1865. (6) Von der Methode der KLEINSTEN QUADRATE IM ALLGEMEINEN und in ihrer ANWENDUNG auf die GEODASIE. (The SMALLEST COMMON QUADRAT and in its APPLICATION to GEODESY.) Pagination: [4], 234 pages (pages numbered [573] to 806). Bei S. Hirzel, Leipzig, Germany, 1867. (7) Fortgesetzte GEODÄTISCHE UNTERSUCHUNGEN von der Methode der KLEINSTEN QUADRATE IM ALLGEMEINEN... (Continuation of GEODETIC STUDIES using the SMALLEST COMMON QUADRAT.) Pagination: [4], 184 pages. Bei S. Hirzel, Leipzig, Germany, 1868. (8) Entwickelung eines NEUEN VERÄNDERTEN VERFAHRENS zur AUSGLEICHUNG EINES DREIECKSNETZES... (Development of a NEW MODIFIED METHOD for the ADJUSTMENT of a TRIANGULAR NETWORK...) Pagination: [4], 101 pages (pages numbered [187] to 287). Bei S. Hirzel, Leipzig, Germany, 1869. (9) Entwickelung des Products einer POTENZ des RADIUS VECTORS... (Developments in Producing the POWER of RADIUS VECTORS...) Pagination: [2], 99 pages (pages numbered [183] to 281). Undated, circa 1870. (10) Entwickelung der NEGATIVEN und UNGRADEN POTENZEN der QUADRATWURZEL der FUNCTION... (Development of the NEGATIVE and ODD POTENTIALS of the SQUARE ROOT of the FUNCTION...) Pagination: [4], 91 pages (pages numbered [285] to 376). Undated, circa 1870. THERE IS ALSO a BOOKLET tipped in at the rear containing another paper by P. A. Hansen titled : UBER die BESTIMMUNG der FIGUR des MONDES in Bezug auf Aufsätze der Herren Newcomb und Delaunay darüber (ON the DETERMINATION of the FIGURE of the MOON, written about ARTICLES by Messrs. Newcomb and Delaunay). The paper is perhaps a transcription of a report given at a conference that took place in 1874 (the year Hansen died). This booklet is in a small format and was clearly tipped into the book later, after it was bound. About Peter Andreas Hansen (from Encyclopedia Britannica online): ******Peter Andreas Hansen, (b. 1795 d. 1874), Danish born German astronomer whose most important work was the improvement of the theories and tables of the orbits of the principal bodies in the solar system. Hansen became director of the Seeberg Observatory, near Gotha, in 1825, and in 1857 a new observatory was built for him. He worked on theoretical geodesy, optics, and probability theory. The systematic character of Hansen’s methods carried celestial mechanics to a new level of power and precision. The tables based on his theory were used until 1923. From his theory of the Moon, Hansen deduced a value close to that now accepted for the distance between Earth and the Sun. Assisted by the astronomer Christian Olufsen, Hansen compiled new tables of the Sun’s positions at various times.******
