Hornung lithograph of an 1863 Roper Steam Carriage. This is nicely detailed image, beautifully rendered on a substantial matte cream-colored stock, debossed to give the appearance of being matted. Captioned with the name of the car and stamped with a debossed "Complete Gallery of the American Automobile" seal. Litho is in fair-to-good condition overall with clean, straight edges. Both lower corners are softly bumped. There is some light staining on the print surface as shown in the detail photos, and two handling dimples near the upper edge. Measures 14" x 22" (36cm x 57cm). Handled with gloves to keep it clean and crisp. Print was included in the Complete Gallery of the American Automobile set printed in 1965. Clarence P. Hornungknown as the "Audubon of the Automobile"began working on these auto illustrations in 1949, after learning that there was no pictorial history of American cars. The colored lithographs illustrate the development of the automobile in the United States from the 1853 Dudgeon Steam Wagon through the 1915 Locomobile Town Coupe. Hornung noted, "Color has been freely introduced in the interest of variety and visual enhancement. Purists may argue that such liberties deviate from the manufacturer's originals; what deadly monotony would result from following too strictly the factory colors of gray, maroon, dark blue or Brewster green throughout the entire series!"
