Description: HERE’S A CIVIL WAR OBSOLETE $1 VIRGINIA GOVERNMENT BANK CURRENCY NOTE ISSUED BY “THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH” Serial number 913, DATED OCT. 29, 1862. Hand-Signed by the Civil War Council President and Treasurer of Portsmouth, Virginia. This note has a plain back. The note bears a dramatic vignette of Lady Liberty holding a spear at center with “SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS” above the image - the same phrase shouted by John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated Abraham Lincoln in Ford's Theatre! This Virginia city issued a series of fractional and dollar denominated notes beginning in October, 1862 for general city needs and to assist local merchants in having some means of making change. Old currency issued by The Government Stock Bank is no longer good at its face value. However, it can certainly still be rare and collectible. These are known as obsolete banknotes. Obsolete currency is valued similarly to any other antique banknote. The note measures 6½”x 2 ½,”shows some wear, but presents nicely.
