Description: Memoir of Nathan Appleton, Massachusetts politician and merchant, by Robert C. Winthrop, politician from Boston. Both children of old New England families, Appleton was one of the first mill owners to use the power loom which in turn led to the development of Lowell, Massachusetts. He also served in the general court of Massachusetts, the United States House of Representatives and was a member of the the Academy of Science and Arts and the Massachusetts Historical Society. Winthrop served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and was the speaker of that body for several years. He also was a member of the American Antiquarian Society. He wrote this memoir as a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society. Pamphlet is inscribed at top of front “Chas Brooks from the author”.
