Son of Joseph J. Stewart. Attended Baltimore City College; University of Maryland. Admitted to the bar, May 17, 1847. Married, Emily G. Stewart, March 16, 1869. Two children, William A. Stewart, Jr., and Emily Slaughter Stewart. Died on August 26, 1892 in Baltimore, Maryland. Chief Clerk, First Branch Baltimore City Council, 1849-1851. Served in House of Delegates, Baltimore City, as Democrat, 1852-1853. Commercial Agent at Port of Baltimore for Republic of Venezuela, 1852. Chief Clerk, House of Delegates, 1854. Authorized to revise legislation and ordinances relating to Baltimore City, 1858. Traveled in Europe, 1865-1867. Speaker of House of Delegates, Baltimore City, First District, 1868. Elected, Baltimore City Supreme Bench, 1892 in the "new judge" election which saw four of five sitting judges voted out of office (the fifth was not up for re-election) as part of public backlash against a judiciary too closely linked with "The Ring," Baltimore's political machine. Served on the bench until his death. Appointed trustee, McDonough Farm School and Fund, July 10, 1868. Secretary, Protestant Episcopal Sunday School Society of Baltimore City. Lay delegate, Convention of Diocese of Maryland. Delegate, General Conventions of the Protestant Episcopal Church, 1883, 1886, 1889. Vestryman, Trinity Protestant Episcopal Church. --- SEE PHOTOS !!!
