"Captain" Reid wrote many adventure novels akin to those written by Frederick Marryat and Robert Louis Stevenson. He was a great admirer of Lord Byron. These novels contain action that takes place primarily in untamed locations including, but not limited to: the American West, Mexico, South Africa, the Himalayas, and Jamaica. In 1850 Reid published his first novel, The Rifle Rangers. This was followed by The Scalp Hunters (1851; dedicated to Commodore Edwin W. Moore, whom he met in 1841), The Desert Home (1852), and The Boy Hunters (1853). The last, set in Texas and Louisiana, was a "juvenile scientific travelogue" that become a favorite with young Theodore Roosevelt, who became a Reid fan. DESCRIPTION: 364 pages 7 x 4 3/4 inches 1859 embossed red cloth hardcover CONDITION: This book is in very good condition with some restoration. As usual with my books I have included many (in this case 20) high definition photos of the book. I try my best to show all major flaws. I also try to textually describe them as well so that there should be no surprises when the book arrives at your home. This book has been rebound and recased into its original cover. The corners and spine ends of the book have been stabilized and repaired. The cloth is most sly clean, but slightly darkened around the edges.. The original lemon endpapers have been retained with new yellow paper hinges. A name is written in ink on the upper part of the front pastedown. All work was done conservatively with no use of acidic papers or tape. I have provided many pictures of the paper and pages so you can see what this looks like. The pages show mild toning for the age of the book. All pages, illustrations, endpapers, etc. are present (the frontispiece is a facsimile bound in) with the book.
