It was issued in 1857 by the firm of "Hide & De Carle" who were "Grocers and Wine Merchants" located on Elizabeth Street in Melbourne. The “Hide & De Carle” partnership was formed in 1857 by Thomas Hide and Edward De Carle, who had both been running their own businesses in Melbourne for several years. Their business was located at 118 Elizabeth Street, near Bourke Street. In addition to being grocers and wine merchants, their business also included a land and estate agency. The partnership lasted until 1861. After the discovery of gold in Victoria, Australia in mid-1851, because of a lack of minor coinage, there were many Halfpenny and Penny tokens issued and used in the colony. All are highly collectible and this is one of them. They were finally outlawed by 1878. Weight: 15.73 Grams, 34 Millimeters, Copper. Mintage unknown. Listed in the "Standard Catalog of World Coins" (1801-1900) by Krause-Mishler. #Tn104. Obverse: HIDE & DE CARLE • GROCERS & WINE MERCHANTS •/• ELIZABETH STREET • MELBOURNE • Crowned British Lion holding shield emblazoned with the Union Jack. Reverse: MELBOURNE: VICTORIA. • 1857 • Blindfolded "Justice" seated left on trade goods, head facing, holding cornucopia and scales. Three-masted sailing ship in background. The Token: A very pleasing example, it did not see long service, and has never been cleaned. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
