Description: First Annual Report of the Board of Directors of the McKean and Elk Land and Improvement Company to the Stockholders by John C. Cresson and Aug. F. Dalson, Engineer, Philadelphia: E. C. & J. Biddle, 1857 In original blindstamped blue cloth boards with gilt front cover title. First edition, octavo, 35 pp. with 1 single page plate, 4 large folding lithograph maps (including two with some hand-coloring and one color geological), and 3 folding chromolithograph geological profiles and columnar sections. A remarkably elaborate (and certainly costly) stockholders report issued for the company’s coal and iron mining ventures located between Smethport and Ridgway in northwestern Pennsylvania. The maps show the location of the property with respect to the region, local transportation routes, coal fields of the estate, and a geological map. Dalson’s "Geological Map of the Howard Hill Region, of the Estate of the McKean, & Elk Land & Improvement Company, Pennsylvania" shows detailed topography on a uniform sepia background and coal and iron seams printed in red. Overall size measures 17 x 14 ½ inches. The sepia background exhibits uniform coloring with no brush strokes or pattern evident and precise boundaries. As such, it is probably hand-coloring that has been expertly applied using a stencil. This map would later be reprinted in Ashburner’s "The Geology of McKean County", 1880 (Marcou 277). The geological profiles and sections use as many as nine printed color and pattern combinations to make a beautifully finished display. Dalson, a Finlander, served as an assistant with the first Pennsylvania Geological Survey and is largely responsible for the large map two sheet of the anthracite regions published with Rogers’ Final Report. Condition: Minor wear to corners and spine ends, binding firm. Text and plates clean with hints of offsetting. Lower right corner of last plate browned at edge. Very good. Not in Marcou, Munn, or Nickles.
