Description: I have here for sale a book entitled LETTERS from EGYPT, ETHIOPIA, AND THE PENINSULA OF SINA. By Dr. Richard Lepsius. With extracts from his CHRONOLOGY OF THE EGYPTIANS, with reference to the Exodus of The Israelites revised by The Author. With two fold out engraved maps and a lovely colour frontispiece. This first edition was published in 1853 by HENRY BOHN, London. Egyptologist Lepsius (1810-1884) personal account of the Prussian Expedition to Egypt of 1842/45, which travelled from Alexandria up the Nile to Nubia, and across the desert from Fayyum to the Libyan Desert. Although an official account of the expedition was published as >Denkmäler aus Ägypten und Äthiopien (Berlin: 1849-1858)<, Lepsius `felt that an account of the external circumstances of the expedition was also necessary. He decided to publish his letters describing the day-to-day activities of himself and his party, and these letters, written to Frederick of Prussia, von Humboldt, Bunsen, and others, have been produced with very little editing from the originals` Bound in blue linen boards. Gilt title lettering on the spine. Embossed decoration to the spine and the boards. Pencilled notes on some of the pages. Spine is sunned. Spine ends and board corners are bumped. Board surfaces are scuffed. Bohn's advertisements to the endpapers. This book is in good condition, pages are clean and bright, tightly bound with no loose or missing pages 578pp, 20cm x 13cm.
