Description: Mississippi River: Block Island Fort This is a wood engraved single sheet only which was published over 170 years ago! It was printed in the March 27, 1852 issue of Gleasons Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion, a Boston illustrated paper which was then beginning only its second year of publication. The sheet measures 11 x 15.5 inches in size. It is in excellent, attractive condition, printed on a high quality of paper and barely showing any signs of aging. The bottom half of the page is devoted to a fine engraving which is titled, VIEW OF BLOCK ISLAND FORT, ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. The site of this fort is not identified, but it is a substantial group of structures, set high atop a cliff overlooking some rapids on the Mississippi, with several people shown on the shore in the foreground, and a flatboat and sailing vessel barely visible on the river in the distance. Accompanying this illustration is a brief bit of text above it, titled BLOCK ISLAND FORT. It is only 9 lines long, and says in its entirety: Our artist has sketched for us below one of the old frontier forts, the ruins of which are still to be found in many parts of the west and particularly along the banks of the Mississippi River, where the scene herewith depicted is located. Could its old walls open their sides and speak to us of the past, what horrible tales they could tell of Indian massacres and the hardships endured by the white pioneers. The top half of the page features a separate engraving, also with a short related article, on The Wounded Indian Stephenson's Celebrated Statue. ********************************** Background on Gleasons Pictorial: Founded in 1851 and published in Boston by James Gleason, Gleasons Pictorial was Americas first successful illustrated weekly periodical. It changed its name to Ballous Pictorial in 1855, but its success soon spawned two stronger competitors, in the form of Frank Leslies Illustrated in 1855, and Harpers Weekly in 1857; and these newer publications put Gleasons/Ballous out of business in 1859. Despite its short existence, though, the Pictorial occupies a significant place in U.S. magazine history, as a pioneer in the illustrated genre. _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
