Description: This is an antique ambrotype of a young man from mid to late 1850s.It is housed in the octagonal Union case made from gutta percha. The case has nothing to do with Union Army or Civil War and actually predates the Civil War by about 10 years. The case is in a decent shape - no cracks, no chips.Overall, it's a nice specimen from the beginnings of photography. Those ambrotypes were selling then in a $3-$5 range, plus the case, so you are talking about $6-$8 cost which would be hundreds of dollars in today's money.Cool piece.
