Description: I have here for sale a book entitled MEMOIRS OF THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LIFE OF WILLIAM PENN by Thomas Clarkson. It is a new edition with a preface in reply to the charges against his character made by Mr Macaulay in his "History of England", by W E Forster. It was published in 1849 by Bradshaw and Blacklock, London, C Gilpin, New York, and John Wiley in Philadelphia. There is a frontispiece engraving of William Penn's Treaty with the Indians, a fold-out b/w street plan of Philadelphia, and a b/w fold-out map of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Dark brown blind stamped hardboards with gilt title lettering to the spine. Both hinges are split so the spine cloth is lifting in several places. Ex-library book so library reference number on the base of the spine. Cloth torn to head and tail also. Library labels to both endpapers. Small pink sticker and purple library stamp to the title page. Frontispiece heavily foxed. Stamp and note to the reverse of the title page. Purple library stamp to the Plan and the Table of Contents and the last page.
