Description: US Civil War Model 1840 Cavalry Sword with Scabbard. The ricasso is marked "Ames Mfg. Co.", "Cabotville", and "1849" and the reverse has "US" over "W.D.". The top rim of the pommel has "W.D." and "J.W.R.". The grip, guard and pommel are tight. The knuckleguard is bent a bit. The grip leather is almost all gone but the wood grip looks nice. The twisted wire is 100% complete. The blade is straight, lightly sharpened, a few light nicks towards the tip, and has some light pitting spots scattered throughout. The scabbard is solid with one dent on the drag, pitting throughout, and has been painted black at some point. The leather washer is intact. Length of the blade is 35 3/4" (1 1/4" wide and 3/8" thick), the sword is 41 1/4", and in the scabbard it is 43 1/16". Only 2940 Ames Cavalry Swords are dated 1849. Check out my other War Items!
