Listed items will not be marked down during the listing duration. Assyrian Head was introduced in 1886, and made until 1891. The design is multi-motif: that is, different faces appear on it. There are both male and female heads. It is a very collectible pattern, and almost everything in it is scarce. Mr. Hogan, the historian of the International Silver Company, stated that based on company records, Assyrian Head was never very successful, meaning it did not sell well, and was withdrawn after only five years. The companion pattern Assyrian, without the head, did do well, and was a popular commercial pattern for almost 20 years. The design is hard to categorize. It is extravagant in a Victorian way, yet it has a neo-classical feel to it. The Victorian pickle fork is long because it was designed to reach into a deep glass vessel called the pickle castor. Toward the end of the 19th century, the pickle castor had become a staple item on the American table. The pickle castor remained essential until after the end of World War 1, when refrigeration became available, eliminating the need to preserve so much food in brine or vinegar. Pickle castors often had a hook to fasten the fork on, as prolonged exposure to brine or vinegar will damage silver. Later, as castors went out of fashion and pickle dishes became the norm, the longer handle was no longer necessary, and a shorter version of the pickle fork became standard. The long handle pickle fork offered here measures about 8 1/4" This is not a piece of new silver. It shows the patina of as much as 135 years of use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There are 2 rest dots on the heel. The pattern is crisp and clear. . I polish all silver before listing on eBay. Please email with any questions before bidding. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE AUCTION DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY.
