Description: 1846 stampless cover from Jackson, TN to Washington, DC. It was sent to the Honorable Martin Brown, a Member of the House of Representatives, by someone from "Chapter No. 52." From the notation on the reverse, it appears to state that its content involve "M. Browns deposition for 26th January 1846." The paper has been folded upon itself to form a cover for mailing purposes. At the top left of the cover, it shows a cancelation reading "Jackson, TN Dec. 14", which is presumably when and from where it was sent. At top right of the cover, it has a handwritten "Paid 10," which relates to the delivery fee. It appears this cover was sealed to enclose a separate letter or document, rather than simply writing on the inside of the cover (as was customary at the time). The cover is in overall very good, clean condition, with just a fold at center and a small tear from where the wax seal was opened. It is a Very Fine piece ready to enhance any collection of early American postal history, particularly of Tennessee, Washington, DC, or Congressional mail.
